Chapter 36

Jack’s concern for Jill was gnawing away at him and he scrolled to her mobile number. ‘How are you and where are you?’

‘I’m at friends in Wiltshire. We’re all here. We’re fine and the kids have been great. We’re going to lie low for a few days.’

‘That’s good. I’m pleased.’

‘Jack, are you OK?’

‘Yeah, I’ve seen a lovely lady in Wimbledon today and I think I know where I’m going now. I need to pull in a few favours tomorrow and I can move everything on.’

‘How old was the lady?’

‘Old enough to be my mother, but beautiful. John Vanner’s mother.’

‘Sorry.’

‘That’s OK. Have the police got any names yet?’

‘They may have but I don’t know. I saw them getting fingerprints off the fridge. The fat ugly one was in there helping himself to cold meat and chicken and then I saw him with a low fat strawberry yoghurt. And that’s when I was tied up with a rat three inches from my nose. Bastards.’

That’s the second time she’s sworn thought Jack. Must be the stress of it all.

‘You know they covered my mouth but not my eyes. How arrogant was that.’

They were going to kill you until they got interrupted, he thought.

‘Their accents sounded French and quite a few prints were found from the kitchen and of course they left the rat. They reckon they can trace that.’

He paused and said, ‘They can trace a rat?’

‘No. The box it was in. Trace it back to where it was bought. You know, I have to tell you something. I peed my pants when he brought the rat out. I haven’t done that since I was three. It was so embarrassing, I can’t tell you.’

‘Yeah, well who likes rats stuck in their face?’

‘Yes, but I’m thirty eight.’

‘Forget it. You’re safe and the kids are safe. That’s all that matters.’

‘I suppose so. I’m never going to France again. Ever.’

‘Ever?’

She managed a laugh.

There was a slight pause and she said, ‘By the way, I tried to ring Lauren Flynn but it just kept going into message. I don’t really know what I would have said to her. It’s just all too awful for words. I mean, I set up the meeting between Tom and the Flynns.’

‘Don’t forget, Lauren Flynn initiated the meeting. You didn’t ask for all this.’

‘I can’t see me ever going back to the club. If I hadn’t stopped that cheque, he might not have come round. He might still be alive. I still can’t believe what happened.’

‘You could “if only” over just about everything you do in life but then you wouldn’t do anything at all. You mustn’t beat yourself up over this. The person who brought this on has vanished and you are a victim too. I’m afraid your husband has more to answer for each day.’

‘I know. You’re right, but when is all this going to end? I’m beginning to feel like a criminal myself.’

‘It’ll end when the people looking for him get back what he has taken from them. Whatever that is.
