Chapter 36
Jackâs concern for Jill was gnawing away at him and he scrolled to her mobile number. âHow are you and where are you?â
âIâm at friends in Wiltshire. Weâre all here. Weâre fine and the kids have been great. Weâre going to lie low for a few days.â
âThatâs good. Iâm pleased.â
âJack, are you OK?â
âYeah, Iâve seen a lovely lady in Wimbledon today and I think I know where Iâm going now. I need to pull in a few favours tomorrow and I can move everything on.â
âHow old was the lady?â
âOld enough to be my mother, but beautiful. John Vannerâs mother.â
âSorry.â
âThatâs OK. Have the police got any names yet?â
âThey may have but I donât know. I saw them getting fingerprints off the fridge. The fat ugly one was in there helping himself to cold meat and chicken and then I saw him with a low fat strawberry yoghurt. And thatâs when I was tied up with a rat three inches from my nose. Bastards.â
Thatâs the second time sheâs sworn thought Jack. Must be the stress of it all.
âYou know they covered my mouth but not my eyes. How arrogant was that.â
They were going to kill you until they got interrupted, he thought.
âTheir accents sounded French and quite a few prints were found from the kitchen and of course they left the rat. They reckon they can trace that.â
He paused and said, âThey can trace a rat?â
âNo. The box it was in. Trace it back to where it was bought. You know, I have to tell you something. I peed my pants when he brought the rat out. I havenât done that since I was three. It was so embarrassing, I canât tell you.â
âYeah, well who likes rats stuck in their face?â
âYes, but Iâm thirty eight.â
âForget it. Youâre safe and the kids are safe. Thatâs all that matters.â
âI suppose so. Iâm never going to France again. Ever.â
âEver?â
She managed a laugh.
There was a slight pause and she said, âBy the way, I tried to ring Lauren Flynn but it just kept going into message. I donât really know what I would have said to her. Itâs just all too awful for words. I mean, I set up the meeting between Tom and the Flynns.â
âDonât forget, Lauren Flynn initiated the meeting. You didnât ask for all this.â
âI canât see me ever going back to the club. If I hadnât stopped that cheque, he might not have come round. He might still be alive. I still canât believe what happened.â
âYou could âif onlyâ over just about everything you do in life but then you wouldnât do anything at all. You mustnât beat yourself up over this. The person who brought this on has vanished and you are a victim too. Iâm afraid your husband has more to answer for each day.â
âI know. Youâre right, but when is all this going to end? Iâm beginning to feel like a criminal myself.â
âItâll end when the people looking for him get back what he has taken from them. Whatever that is.
